Found this on the SWG forums, this works for characters as well as pets. If you're leveling a pet and you are higher than the pet look here for mobs to kill, then let them kill the mobs without your help, they will gain xp for mobs the same way you would. It seems faster this way, since you're not having to worry about yourself at first, all you have to pay attention to is the pets health.
